What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development was defined in "Our Common Future" - the Brundtland report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (1987) - as:
"development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
Sustainable development does not mean a return to a pre-industrial era, but calls for continued economic growth, with the public, business and industry acknowledging and taking responsibility for their impact on society and the environment.
Sonairte's mission is to illustrate sustainability of production and distribution and the benefits of sustainable development by providing information and education which can be used by individuals and companies in their professional and private life about optimum ways to produce food, power and transport, deal with waste and handle the ever growing challenges presented by climate change and peak oil; while supporting biodiversity and the natural environment and realising the importance of individual wellbeing and the upholding of human dignity.
