The Aim

The current programme is for children between the ages of 7 to 12 years. The aim of the programme is to raise in children and adults of all ages an appreciation of the natural environment and the effect of people on that environment.

The Programme

The two hour programme is divided into three key areas of environmental education –

  • Alternative Energy in the Energy Courtyard
  • Organic horticulture in the Organic Garden
  • Earth education on the Nature Trail

The Energy Courtyard This part of the tour aims to stimulate students to think about energy consumption and production and the effects of our choices on the environment. Features include demonstrations of passive solar energy, solar panels and wind turbines. There are also interactive exhibits of kinetic energy, wave power and biomass.

The Walled Garden During the tour of the Organic Garden the children are interactively introduced to food for the soil, compost making, crop rotation, natural pest and weed control, plants as food, medicine and fertiliser, as well as many other aspects of organic horticulture. This section of the tour also features demonstrations of recycling and reusing.

The Nature Trail The Nature Trail covers an area of 5 acres of woodland, wetlands, a rath and magnificent scenery. Whilst exploring this area the children discover the amazing sounds, colours and textures of nature through interactive games they are encouraged to recognise and appreciate the interdependence of all living things and the importance of protecting the earth.
